Testing a New Market: A Protocol for a Traced Short List

Test a market with 30 to 50 accounts: a traced short list (source, date, reason, review status) and a results log, with Apollo or Lead Intelligence.

The problem: a test without a trace proves nothing

You want to know whether a new market (a country, a sector, a company size) responds to your offer. The classic trap: buy a tool, export 2,000 contacts, send, then face a silence you cannot read. Was it the wrong segment, the wrong message, the wrong contacts? Without a record of who was chosen, why and with what result, you cannot answer. This article gives the protocol. To choose between Apollo and Lead Intelligence for your situation, see Apollo or Lead Intelligence: which alternative for conversion?.

The protocol in four steps

The US International Trade Administration recommends, in its market research guide, starting from precise research questions, distinguishing primary research (direct contact with the market: interviews, surveys) from secondary research (reports, statistics), and testing one market at a time before expanding. Applied to prospecting:

  1. One written question. Example: "Do operations directors at German industrial SMEs respond to our offer?"
  2. A short list of 30 to 50 accounts. Enough to see a signal, few enough to review every line.
  3. One record per account with four fields: source (where the account came from), date added, reason for inclusion (one sentence), review status (to review, validated, dropped).
  4. A results log: message sent, reply or not, reason given, next decision.
What each tool brings to the protocol

Reason for inclusionWritten by you from the filters usedPriority reason ('why now') displayed; a signal without a source link is not delivered as proof

What to trace, and why

  • The source avoids redoing a sort already done and shows whether one channel produces better replies.
  • The date matters: information about an account goes stale. An account added three months ago is not worth what it was.
  • The reason for inclusion protects against bias: if you cannot state it in one sentence, the account probably does not belong on the short list.
  • The review status separates what you reviewed from what the tool proposed. It is the line that stops you from sending to an unverified account.

How to read the result

After a few weeks, count: how many accounts contacted, how many replies, how many useful conversations, and which reasons come back. Three readings are possible: the segment responds (widen to a second short list), the segment does not respond but the reason is clear (change the message or the segment), or the log is too empty to conclude (the test did not happen). The International Trade Administration reminds readers that it often takes months, sometimes years, to see a return on investment in a new market: do not draw a final conclusion from a first send.

Where each tool stops

Apollo does not validate the market and neither does Lead Intelligence. Lead Intelligence keeps doubtful accounts visible and has you review actions, but the date added, the reply reason and the final decision remain your logging work. Choose the tool that most reduces your sorting effort without hiding that human work.
