Turn a founder journal into a verifiable B2B sales narrative

Turn field notes into a B2B sales narrative with an observed problem, a useful idea, available proof, and a clear limitation.

A founder journal may hold meeting notes, objections, failed experiments, and decisions made under pressure. For a B2B buyer, the valuable part is not the chronology. It is what those notes reveal about the buyer's problem.

The 2025 Edelman and LinkedIn study of B2B decision-makers, presented in LinkedIn's official post, covers thought leadership. Among its hidden decision-makers, 55% said they used this content to vet vendors. That is a reason to make your ideas useful, not a forecast of conversion from your own posts.

Sort the notes before writing

Look for an observation that arose more than once. Then separate the buyer's situation, the difficulty they described, your interpretation, and what you actually checked. If a note says, “sales leadership rejected our dashboard,” ask what the objection concerned: trust in the data, rollout effort, or unclear ownership? One objection is not a general market finding.

Your journal can suggest a useful hypothesis, but it does not automatically provide customer proof. Check the buyer's words with them, get permission before attribution, and remove confidential detail.

Turn the episode into an idea the buyer can use

The same study, reported by trade press, reports that 86% of hidden decision-makers surveyed preferred ideas that challenge their assumptions. That describes the respondents to this survey. It does not mean provocation alone sells. Choose a thought from your notes that clarifies a practical decision, such as: “Before buying another forecasting tool, decide who resolves differences between sales and finance figures.”

Write for the reader in this order: their problem, a possible consequence of leaving it unresolved, an idea to test, the evidence available, and the next check. The founder's decision gives context: “We changed how we explain discrepancies after several interviews.” It should not stand in for a customer outcome.

Put evidence beside every claim

A founder note can establish that an objection came up in your conversations. It cannot establish that your method halves errors without a defined, verifiable measurement. For each sales claim, list what you can show: a demonstration, an authorised case, a dated measurement, or an open hypothesis.

Imagine a company selling inventory software. Its journal records three conversations in which buyers ask who approves the numbers. An honest narrative would say, “Here is how approval appears in the demo; let's see whether that flow fits your internal controls.” Three conversations do not prove broad demand or a financial gain.

Make the narrative useful across the buying group

The Edelman and LinkedIn study distinguishes the primary buyer from people who influence a decision without meeting the sales team. The same problem therefore needs to make sense both to the user and to someone assessing cost, security, or implementation. Prepare a short version your contact can share, with a central idea and a piece of evidence they can open.

The published guides on building a B2B pitch from a customer story and turning a customer story into a pitch start with a customer's account. Here the raw material is the founder's journal. It generates a sales hypothesis that still needs independent evidence.

Before using the narrative

Ask someone outside the company to read it. Can they restate the buyer's problem without knowing the founder? Can they tell which sentence is an observation, which is a hypothesis, and which document supports a result? If proof is missing, seek another interview or a demonstration before promising an outcome. The cited study measures responses from B2B decision-makers in 2025, not the performance of this method for your business.
